Alcohol / Substance Use Treatment and Recovery
Statistics are bleak: SAMHSA’s 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that approximately 19.3 million people aged 18 or older had a substance use disorder in the past year.

The terminology can be confusing: addiction, substance abuse, and substance use disorders are terms most commonly used to define, what the American Society of Addiction Medicine, calls addiction: “Addiction is a treatable, chronic medical disease involving complex interactions among brain circuits, genetics, the environment, and an individual’s life experiences.” People with addiction use substances or engage in behaviors that become compulsive and often continue despite harmful consequences. Drugfree.org continues by explaining:

The Disease Model of Addiction

Addiction is defined as a disease by most medical associations, including the American Medical Association and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, addiction is caused by a combination of behavioral, psychological, environmental and biological factors. Genetic risk factors account for about half of the likelihood that an individual will develop addiction.

Addiction involves changes in the functioning of the brain and body due to persistent use of nicotine, alcohol and/or other substances.

The consequences of untreated addiction often include other physical and mental health disorders that require medical attention. If left untreated over time, addiction becomes more severe, disabling, and life-threatening.

Treatment for Addiction and Substance use Disorders

As disheartening as it may be to recognize that the condition persists in a loved one, friend, or oneself, there is a silver lining in this cloud: prevention efforts and treatment approaches for addiction are generally as successful as those for other chronic diseases.

Alpha-Stim

Relieving Anxiety, Insomnia, Depression, and Pain

Ditch the Meds

Prescription medications attempt to target an issue or imbalance in the body with the use of chemicals. But your body is both chemical and electrical. And since an enormous part of the nervous system is controlled by internal electrical impulses. why treat your body with chemicals in the form of pills or injections?

What Alpha-Stim Is and How It Works

Alpha-Stim is a small device that generates unique, patented waveforms to modulate the cells’ signals to return to baseline, normal functioning. Using a method called cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES), a current (actually, a microcurrent– so tiny, just millionths of an ampere, and so gentle that most people don’t even feel it) is administered to patients through attachable clips.

Alpha-Stim begins at the electron level, allowing your body’s cells to return to their natural functioning state and help induce a pleasant, relaxed feeling of well-being and provide long-lasting, cumulative relief without the risk of negative effects such as tolerance and medication addiction.

It can be used on its own or in conjunction with physical therapy, medication, and other forms of pain management.

Autoimmune Diseases
Much attention has focused on the human immune system of late.

The Immune System Defined

In its simplest terms, the overall function of the immune system is to prevent or limit infection. The immune system is complex and pervasive. There are numerous cell types that either circulate throughout the body or reside in a particular tissue. Each cell type plays a unique role, with different ways of recognizing problems, communicating with other cells, and performing their functions.

Generally, the body does an impressive job of regulating itself, however, complications can arise when it does not function properly.  For people suffering from autoimmune disorders, the body may feel as if it is under siege.

Immune system disorders cause abnormally low activity or overactivity of the immune system.  Some issues are less pervasive, such as pollen allergy, while others are extensive, such as genetic disorders that wipe out the presence or function of an entire set of immune cells. In cases of immune system overactivity, the body attacks and damages its own tissues (autoimmune diseases). Immune deficiency diseases decrease the body’s ability to fight invaders, causing vulnerability to infections.

Causes of Autoimmune Disorders

The NCBI states that:

  • 30% of all autoimmune diseases are connected to genetic predisposition
  • 70 % are due to environmental factors, including toxic chemicals, dietary components, gut dysbiosis, and infections.

Autoimmune Disorders

Healthline indicates that there are more than 80 different autoimmune diseases. Here are 14 of the most common ones.

  1. Type 1 diabetes
  2. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
  3. Psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis
  4. Multiple sclerosis
  5. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  6. Addison’s disease
  7. Graves’ disease (overactive thyroid)
  8. Sjögren’s syndrome
  9. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (underactive thyroid)
  10. Myasthenia gravis
  11. Autoimmune vasculitis
  12. Pernicious anemia
  13. Celiac disease
  14. Inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a term used to describe conditions that cause inflammation in the lining of the intestinal wall. Each type of IBD affects a different part of the GI tract.

How We Can Help

With so many conditions associated with autoimmune disorders, diagnosing might seem daunting. However, we employ Avise CTD testing.

AVISE CTD is an accurate, comprehensive, and innovative rheumatic disease diagnostic test that uses patented CB-CAPs technology. AVISE CTD can provide us with the information we need to help you get a diagnosis.

AVISE testing uses patented biomarkers and the highest quality standards to provide us with accurate results to help make an accurate diagnosis. When combined with our clinical assessment, AVISE testing can provide the information necessary to help make a dierential diagnosis.

With the convenience of a single blood draw, AVISE CTD can save time and money and help get you on the path to better health. Getting an accurate and early diagnosis depends on you communicating your symptoms to your physician. That information, along with accurate test results may help assist in an earlier diagnosis.

Post Covid Syndrome

Had Covid and Just Feel Off?

Many of us have had Covid in some fashion or another. Regardless of the severity, sometimes even after a “full” recovery, there are nagging and lingering symptoms. It’s not your imagination. Common complaints include:

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • PTSD

Methods of Treatment

We have been helping patients successfully treat and manage Long Term Covid symptoms. Often the “prescription” is a balance of medical management (our role) and self-management (the patient’s behaviors).

We tailor Long Covid treatments according to the condition of the patient. One size does not fit all. In addition to discussing exercise and sleep rituals, we may recommend clinical testing (such as chest X-rays, EKG), and other imaging and labs (including full blood or specific blood panel testing) to best determine the most appropriate therapy.

Many patients have one or more additional conditions such as diabetes, respiratory, kidney, or heart disease co-occurring with Long Covid. We are mindful of those conditions as we examine a patient’s underlining cause of symptoms and make informed judgments about treating Long Covid.

The Changing Landscape of Long Covid Protocols

Late last year, we attended the New York State Department of Health on The Use of Multidisciplinary Approaches to Long COVID Care advocating the use of holistic / patient-centered approaches. Since that time, additional recommendations from a variety of disciplines have yielded other successful approaches. We diligently monitor these updates and bring all proven strategies to our patients. Even as the treatments change, we are guided by science and the data.

It is unlikely that these conditions will go away on their own. Please contact us by email or phone (716) 277-0267 to discuss what you’re experiencing and how we might be able to help you feel like yourself again.
